Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, is marking its 64th anniversary with the institution’s management acknowledging the contributions of government, alumni, traditional institutions, staff, students and other stakeholders to its development.
The anniversary is being observed on Sunday, October 4, 2026, with a commemorative message signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, reflecting on the university’s history and its contribution to higher education in Nigeria.
Prof. Ahmed expressed appreciation to the university’s friends, parents, guardians, alumni and well-wishers for their continued support and relationship with the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor also acknowledged the role of the Federal Government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in ongoing reforms and interventions in the education sector, which he said have had a positive impact on the university.
The university management further recognised the contributions of the governors of Zamfara, Kaduna and Katsina states — Dauda Lawal, Uba Sani and Umar Dikko Radda — for their engagement and support.
The institution also acknowledged the contributions of the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, alongside other traditional and institutional stakeholders.
Prof. Ahmed extended appreciation to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa; ABU’s Chancellor, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Ugochukwu Achebe; the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Mahmoud Yayale Ahmed; members of Council and Senate, as well as the university’s staff and students.
Founded in 1962, Ahmadu Bello University has remained one of Nigeria’s major higher education institutions, with a long-standing role in teaching, research and human capital development, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
The anniversary message also featured historical photographs documenting important moments in the university’s history, including its official opening, early leadership and academic activities.
As the institution marks 64 years, its management said it remains focused on its educational and research responsibilities while seeking continued support from alumni and other stakeholders.
