The Federal Government has called on social media influencers and digital content creators to prioritize fact-checking and responsible communication, warning that the spread of unverified information could undermine peace, public trust and national development.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs and Public Enlightenment, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, made the call on Monday while delivering his welcome address at the maiden Arewa Media Summit in Kano.
Speaking on the summit's theme, "Government-Citizen Accord: Accountability, Responsibility and Ethical Media Practice," Abdulaziz said sustainable democracy and national progress depend on trust, accountability and effective collaboration between government, the media and citizens.
He described the media as a vital bridge between government and the public, stressing that ethical journalism and accurate reporting are essential for promoting peace, unity and national development.
Abdulaziz urged social media influencers to verify the authenticity of information before publishing, noting that digital platforms now play a significant role in shaping public opinion.
"Today, a single post can inspire hope or fuel conflict within moments. The pursuit of popularity or online engagement should never come at the expense of national peace and stability," he said.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, he called on social media users to act responsibly, correct misinformation when necessary, and contribute to maintaining peaceful civic engagement.
He also disclosed that more than 100 supporters of the ruling APC and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had been trained on strategic communication and effective dissemination of government policies and achievements.
According to him, the summit also introduced the Gani-Ya-Kori-Ji initiative, a programme designed to tour Northern states and highlight development projects executed by the Federal Government and state governments that have received limited public attention.
Abdulaziz said the summit reflects the Tinubu administration's commitment to protecting freedom of expression, promoting dialogue and strengthening democratic governance.
He concluded by encouraging participants to develop practical recommendations that would enhance transparent governance, uphold ethical media practice and improve government-citizen relations.
