Christian stakeholders in Niger State, in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), have called for the inclusion of a Christian as Deputy Governor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The demand was made during a press conference in Minna, where the group expressed concerns over what it described as the marginalization of Christians in the state's political and governance structure. The stakeholders said Christians in the state deserve greater representation and vowed to continue advocating for their political rights.
The development comes days after former Niger State Commissioner for Information and APC chieftain, Jonathan Vatsa, urged Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to choose a Christian running mate for the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking in Minna, Vatsa alleged that Christians have been sidelined in the party's candidate selection process and political appointments. He warned that the ruling APC could lose support from the Christian community if the perceived imbalance is not addressed.
According to him, selecting a Christian deputy governorship candidate would promote inclusion, foster unity, and strengthen the party's chances in the 2027 elections.
The renewed calls have sparked fresh political debate across Niger State as political stakeholders begin positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
