The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that the commission recovered N7.2 million stolen by suspected internet fraudsters from the bank account of a serving judge after the funds were withdrawn overnight.
Olukoyede made the disclosure during the public presentation of two books authored by retired High Court judge, Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye.
According to the EFCC Chairman, the judge, who serves in a South-South state, alerted him after receiving multiple debit notifications in the early hours of the morning, revealing that funds she had saved over six years for her child's education had been emptied from her account.
He said the commission swiftly launched an investigation and successfully recovered the entire amount before the end of the same day.
Olukoyede described the incident as a reminder of the growing threat posed by cybercrime and called for stronger collaboration among law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, financial institutions and the public to combat financial crimes.
The EFCC Chairman also highlighted the commission's increasing use of artificial intelligence in crime investigation, while urging lawmakers and legal experts to review existing laws to address the admissibility of AI-generated evidence in court.
The remarks were made at the unveiling of Electronic Evidence (Second Edition) and A Compendium of Cases on Electronic Evidence (Volume II, 2020–2025), attended by senior judicial officers and legal practitioners from across the country.
