The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, 244 rounds of live ammunition and other items during a security operation in Lapai Local Government Area.
According to the Command, police operatives attached to the Lapai Division, working with local vigilantes, acted on credible intelligence and intercepted the suspects at a riverbank in Yawa Village, a border community between Niger and Kogi states, in the early hours of June 22.
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Abubakar, 28, Shede Ibrahim, 25, and Babuga Lawali, 20, all from Shanawa Village in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, were arrested while attempting to cross the river.
Items recovered from the suspects included an AK-47 rifle with a magazine, 244 rounds of live ammunition, three cutlasses and ₦28,000 cash.
The Police Command said investigations are ongoing to identify other possible accomplices and recover additional weapons. The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The confirmation follows an earlier report by Lapai TV on the operation.
