The Niger State Police Command has arrested a man, Mohammed Jamiu, following the recovery of 27 pieces of ₦1,000 notes suspected to be counterfeit, alongside charms and other items from a room in a students’ lodge in Bida.
The items were recovered on September 5, 2026, after some individuals reportedly discovered them while fumigating grasses around the students’ lodge, according to the Niger State Police Crime Bulletin issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun.
Following the discovery, police operatives attached to the ‘B’ Division, Bida, were deployed to the location and recovered the suspected counterfeit currency, charms, a calabash and a red cloth.
The Police identified the arrested suspect as Mohammed Jamiu and said he was taken into custody as investigations commenced.
According to the Command, Jamiu told investigators that the suspected counterfeit notes were given to him after he sold his sewing machine in Suleja.
He also reportedly told investigators that the charms recovered from the room had been inherited from his grandfather.
The Police Command said the matter remains under investigation, with further developments expected as investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the recovered items and the suspected counterfeit currency.
