The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on Nigeria's banking sector to strengthen efforts aimed at disrupting terrorism financing and other illicit financial activities threatening national security.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Oliver Alawuba, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, the Army Chief described the financial sector as a critical partner in safeguarding national stability.
Shaibu urged banks to enhance financial surveillance and intelligence-sharing mechanisms capable of detecting and blocking suspicious transactions linked to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
He also called on Alawuba, who serves as Chairman of the Body of Bank CEOs, to mobilise the banking industry in support of efforts to cut off financial channels used by criminal networks.
The COAS further disclosed that the Nigerian Army is partnering with UBA to develop mortgage and housing schemes for serving and retired military personnel, describing improved welfare as essential to operational effectiveness.
In response, Alawuba reaffirmed UBA's commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army through mortgage financing, infrastructure support, and welfare initiatives for personnel.
