Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially assumed duty as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar.
Yakubu arrived in Doha on Wednesday, where he was received by Qatar’s Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro. Also present to welcome him were 13 African ambassadors, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
The former INEC chairman served from 2015 to 2025, overseeing electoral reforms aimed at improving the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process through increased use of technology, enhanced voter accreditation systems, and strengthened democratic institutions.
The Federal Government said his appointment reflects confidence in his leadership and experience, with expectations that he will strengthen Nigeria-Qatar relations in key areas including trade, investment, energy, education, and diplomatic cooperation.
Yakubu is expected to advance Nigeria’s bilateral interests and deepen engagement between both countries.
