The Niger State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
The declaration was approved by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to enable Muslims and residents of the state to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah—the migration of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Makkah to Madinah, a historic event that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman described the Hijrah as a symbol of sacrifice, faith, perseverance, discipline and resilience, urging citizens to draw inspiration from its enduring lessons.
He called on residents to use the occasion to pray for lasting peace, security, unity and prosperity in Niger State and Nigeria. He also encouraged religious leaders to promote patriotism, tolerance, moral values and peaceful coexistence among citizens.
The SSG reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Bago’s administration to the implementation of the New Niger Agenda, aimed at improving the welfare and living standards of the people.
He congratulated the Muslim Ummah and all residents of the state on the beginning of the year 1448 AH and prayed for continued peace, progress, good health and prosperity across Niger State.
