ASUU IBBUL Declares Indefinite Strike Over Non-Implementation of 2025 FG/ASUU Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) Branch, has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike with immediate effect, citing the continued non-implementation of critical components of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement by the Niger State Government.

The decision was contained in a statement issued following a Congress of the union held at the University's Convocation Area on Monday, August 24, 2026.

According to ASUU IBBUL, the strike followed what it described as the continued failure to implement outstanding aspects of the agreement despite several engagements, appeals and attempts at dialogue with relevant authorities and stakeholders.

The union said the agreement was reached with the participation of major stakeholders, including state governments and public universities across the country, and therefore called for its full implementation.

ASUU IBBUL cited several state universities, including institutions in Bauchi, Gombe, Benue, Yobe, Osun, Ekiti and Kano, as having implemented the agreement. It also referenced the reported implementation at Nasarawa State University.

The union expressed concern that continued non-implementation could contribute to the loss of experienced academic staff from IBBUL and affect the stability and integrity of the university system.

It consequently called on the Niger State Government, education stakeholders, traditional leaders and other well-meaning Nigerlites to intervene and urge the government to address the outstanding issues.

ASUU IBBUL said it remained open to genuine, meaningful and result-oriented dialogue, stressing that the industrial action could be suspended once there is demonstrable commitment and concrete action towards implementing the agreement.

The union also acknowledged the potential impact of the strike on students, parents and other stakeholders, but maintained that resolving the issues that led to the action was necessary to restore industrial harmony at the university.
