Research projects on cholera prevention and lithium resource assessment among 174 proposals selected nationwide under the 2025 National Research Fund cycle.
Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBB University), Lapai, has secured two grants worth a combined ₦76.485 million under the 2025 National Research Fund (NRF) programme of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The two projects were among 174 research proposals approved nationwide for funding under the 2025 NRF cycle, according to information released by the university.
Speaking during the presentation of award letters to the principal researchers, the Vice-Chancellor of IBB University, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, congratulated the researchers and their teams, describing the awards as a significant achievement for the institution.
He urged the beneficiaries to implement the projects in line with the conditions outlined in the award letters and approved research proposals, while assuring them of the university management’s support throughout the execution process.
The first project, valued at ₦48.485 million, is titled “Development of a National Groundwater Risk Assessment Framework for Informed Public Health Policy Towards Ending Recurrent Cholera Outbreaks in Nigeria.” The project is being led by Dr. Hussaini Mohammed Majiya, an Associate Professor of Public Health Microbiology and Biotechnology, former Head of the Department of Microbiology, and Director of the Centre for Applied Sciences and Technology Research (CASTER).
The second project, awarded ₦28 million, is titled “Developing Smart Geoscientific Tracers to Assess Strategic Lithium Deposits in Nigeria as a Catalyst for Clean Energy Leadership and Sustainable Development Vision.” It is led by Dr. Tanko Yusuf Usman, an Associate Professor of Applied Geophysics, Head of the Department of Physics, and Acting Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Professor Sulaiman also expressed hope that the university would attract additional TETFund National Research Fund grants and other research interventions in the future.
The funding is expected to support research efforts in critical areas including public health, environmental management, mineral resource development, and sustainable energy, while strengthening the university’s contribution to national development through innovation and scientific research.
