President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court and remove the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.
The President gave the directive in a statement issued on Thursday, August 6, 2026, after the EFCC obtained a court order on August 5 to freeze the state's accounts.
Tinubu said he supports the independence of anti-corruption agencies and does not normally interfere in their work. However, he explained that the timing of the court order, just days before the Osun State governorship election, could create the impression that the Federal Government is trying to influence the election.
He said he had not been fully briefed on the reasons behind the EFCC's action but believed it was necessary to act in order to protect public confidence in the electoral process.
The President therefore directed the EFCC to immediately ask the court to cancel the order and stop its action against the Osun State Government.
