The newly redeployed State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command, Commandant Abdulhamid Salisu Kabara, has formally assumed office, taking over the leadership of the Command from Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, DSC Abubakar Rabiu Muti, Kabara assumed duty at a sensitive period for the Command following the deaths of 37 persons arrested in connection with suspected illegal mining activities in the state.
The new Commandant expressed sadness over the deaths and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and others affected by the incident.
Kabara reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its statutory responsibilities, including arrest, investigation, enforcement and efforts to combat illegal mining, while stressing that the protection of human life must remain a fundamental consideration in the discharge of those duties.
He said law enforcement responsibilities must be carried out alongside the obligation to safeguard the dignity, safety and welfare of persons in custody.
The Commandant also prayed for the forgiveness of the shortcomings of the deceased and for their souls to rest in peace. He further prayed for strength and fortitude for their families, relatives and loved ones to bear the loss.
The assumption of office comes as the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain a matter of official investigation.
