The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) chapter, says the ongoing industrial action at the university could be resolved within days if all parties fulfil their respective responsibilities.
The ASUU-IBBUL Chairman, Dr. Galadima Bala, disclosed this after the union’s congress, saying discussions involving the university management, government and the university’s governing council had produced a possible roadmap towards ending the dispute.
According to him, the parties had addressed the issues surrounding the strike and communicated relevant information to the Niger State Government as part of efforts to reach an amicable resolution.
“We seem to have a roadmap now on how we can end this strike,” Bala said, adding that the union was putting measures in place to conclude the process as quickly as possible.
He said the strike could end “within this week or next week” if the union, government and university management properly fulfil their respective obligations.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of IBBUL, Professor Muhammad Hadi Suleiman, who attended the ASUU congress, confirmed that the university had received communication from the government concerning the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
Suleiman clarified, however, that the ASUU chairman remained responsible for communicating the outcome of the union’s congress, noting that he could not speak on behalf of the union.
He said the next step would involve discussions with the government on the appropriate channel for transmitting the communication in accordance with ASUU’s standard operating procedures.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, ASUU’s procedure generally requires relevant documents to be signed by the union and government, making the agreement binding on the parties involved.
