Alhaji Idris Usman, popularly known as Shinkafan Nupe, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 Niger State governorship election under the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP).
In a statement dated September 18, 2026, Usman said his decision followed consultations with political, traditional, religious, community and other stakeholders across the state.
He said his proposed bid was motivated by concerns over the challenges facing residents, particularly insecurity, access to quality education, unpaid entitlements of retirees, difficulties confronting farmers and limited economic opportunities for young people.
Usman said that if elected, he would serve for one four-year term, describing the commitment as being in the spirit of respecting what he described as the state's established zoning arrangement.
He said the proposed one-term tenure was intended to provide clarity on his political ambition and support what he described as a peaceful and orderly transition of political leadership.
On his policy priorities, Usman outlined security and social stability, education and human capital development, healthcare and social protection, agricultural transformation, economic growth, infrastructure, youth employment and entrepreneurship, women's inclusion, accountability, merit and sustainable development.
He also called for stronger public institutions and greater transparency in the management of public resources, while advocating equal access to opportunities irrespective of political connections or social status.
Usman further said his campaign would focus on issues rather than personal attacks, stressing that political disagreements should not destroy relationships among citizens.
He appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, professionals, women, youths, business communities and other stakeholders to participate in discussions on the future direction of Niger State.
The governorship aspirant said he did not present himself as the sole solution to the state's challenges, describing the development of Niger State as a collective responsibility.
His declaration comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the particulars of nominated governorship candidates in August, including candidates from several political parties.
