Niger State had a domestic debt stock of nearly ₦140 billion as of June 30, 2026, placing the state highest among the six North Central states and sixth among Nigeria’s 36 states, according to the Debt Management Office (DMO).
The figure, contained in the DMO’s latest States and FCT Domestic Debt Stock report published on September 25, 2026, puts Niger State’s domestic debt at ₦139,997,696,535.72.
Within the North Central region, Niger’s figure is higher than Benue’s ₦112.32 billion, Plateau’s ₦59.37 billion, Kwara’s ₦51.06 billion, Nasarawa’s ₦27.67 billion and Kogi’s ₦25.39 billion.
Nationwide, Lagos recorded the highest domestic debt among the states at about ₦1.195 trillion, followed by Delta at ₦369.30 billion, Rivers at ₦354.64 billion, Ogun at ₦189.05 billion and Edo at ₦214.93 billion. Based on the DMO table, Niger ranks sixth among the 36 states.
The DMO reported that the combined domestic debt stock of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory stood at ₦4.591 trillion as of June 30, 2026. The agency said the figures were generated from reports received from the 36 states and the FCT.
