IBBU Medical Students Relocated to ABU for Clinical Training

The Management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, has secured approval from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to absorb its 300-level medical students for clinical studies, ensuring continuity in their academic and professional training.

The approval followed a collaboration visit by an IBBU delegation led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Suleiman, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Salihu Mohammed Niworu, and the Registrar, Alhaji Idris Saleh Kusherki.

The arrangement will allow the affected students to continue their clinical training at the ABU Teaching Hospital, Shika, while IBB University addresses outstanding requirements for full accreditation of its medical programme.

Speaking during the engagement, Professor Niworu said the intervention became necessary to prevent disruption to the students’ academic progression.

He added that the Niger State Government is investing in equipment, teaching facilities, and infrastructure upgrades for the University’s Teaching Hospital in line with standards set by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

According to him, the temporary collaboration with ABU will ensure uninterrupted medical training as efforts continue toward securing full accreditation.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, welcomed the partnership and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting academic collaboration among Nigerian universities.

He confirmed that ABU had approved the request to admit the affected students for clinical studies but noted that both institutions would continue consultations with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to ensure full compliance with regulatory guidelines.

As part of the next steps, officials from both universities’ Colleges of Health and Medical Sciences are expected to engage with the MDCN to finalise implementation procedures.

IBB University expressed appreciation to ABU for its support and commitment to advancing medical education and human capital development.

The development comes after the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria earlier granted IBB University a six-month window to address accreditation requirements for its medical programme, with university authorities expressing optimism that ongoing interventions will lead to full accreditation.
