The Niger State Police Command has announced the immediate commencement of enforcement against motorists using covered, defaced, or unregistered number plates across the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the directive was approved by the Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, as part of efforts to strengthen security and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
According to the Command, there has been a growing trend of motorists deliberately covering, tampering with, or removing vehicle number plates, a practice that violates provisions of the Road Traffic Act and National Road Traffic Regulations.
The Police noted that all vehicles operating on public roads are required by law to clearly display valid registration number plates at all times, warning that violators will face enforcement measures.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the state to commence immediate monitoring and enforcement of the directive.
Vehicle owners have been advised to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered, display number plates on both the front and rear, and remove any form of obstruction that may conceal vehicle identification.
The Command also appealed to members of the public, transport unions, and commercial drivers to cooperate with law enforcement officers during the exercise, emphasizing that the measure is aimed at enhancing public safety and strengthening efforts to combat crime.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged motorists to comply with the regulations to avoid sanctions.
