The Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, security, and inclusive development during the New Niger Quarterly Media Briefing held at the Niger State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (NITDA) hall in Minna.
The briefing brought together senior government officials, security agencies, and media executives to provide updates on key government policies and projects while responding to questions from journalists. The initiative is aimed at strengthening public engagement and improving access to information on government activities.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, said the administration of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago remains committed to open governance and public accountability.
According to the commissioner, the quarterly media briefing provides a platform for citizens to better understand government policies through the media while encouraging journalists to ask objective and constructive questions that promote informed public discourse.
Officials of the New Niger coordinating agency also explained the state's project implementation framework, stating that the agency serves as a coordinating body for major government initiatives while relevant ministries and agencies execute approved projects.
The agency further disclosed that a Compensation Committee has been established to address compensation and land ownership issues before the commencement of projects, with the aim of reducing delays associated with disputes.
On security, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said security agencies are closely monitoring population movements into Niger State due to security challenges in neighbouring states.
He explained that the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), screens and profiles new arrivals to verify their identities and assess potential security risks before they are integrated into host communities.
The briefing also featured updates from other government officials. The Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs announced plans to enforce registration and security profiling for pastoralists while regulating cattle movement into and out of the state.
Representatives from the Ministry of Lands and Survey and the Ministry of Mineral Resources outlined ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining activities, while the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy highlighted progress in rural electrification and renewable energy projects across the state.
The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session during which journalists sought clarification on government policies, project implementation timelines, and public welfare programmes.
In an interview with Lapai TV after the briefing, Hon. Nana said the quarterly engagement reflects the government's commitment to openness by providing regular opportunities for citizens to receive updates directly from public officials.
He added that the Ministry of Information and Orientation is working to strengthen digital communication, improve the capacity of information officers across ministries, and expand collaboration with media organisations to enhance the timely dissemination of verified information and counter misinformation.
The commissioner also reiterated the administration's readiness to remain accountable to the public, stating that continued engagement with the media is essential to strengthening transparency and good governance in Niger State.
