Northern Activist Says Poverty, Illiteracy Hinder Organized Protests in the North

A Northern activist, Comrade IG Wala, has said that poverty and illiteracy are major reasons many people in Northern Nigeria struggle to participate in organized protests and civic movements.

In a statement issued on June 14, 2026, Wala said widespread hunger and lack of education have made it difficult for many citizens to focus on issues such as governance reforms and accountability.

He noted that protests in some Northern communities often lose their original purpose as economic hardship pushes some individuals toward looting and other unlawful activities.

According to him, the situation allows political leaders to dismiss genuine public grievances and avoid accountability.

Wala called for greater efforts to address poverty and improve access to education, stressing that these challenges must be tackled to strengthen civic engagement and national development.
