Bello Allies Reject Bago’s ‘Betrayal’ Claims, Call for Focus on Governance and Accountability

Recent comments by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago regarding alleged political betrayal have drawn criticism from members of the political structure associated with former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who argue that the narrative risks shifting attention away from governance and public accountability.
In reactions obtained by this writer, some allies of the former governor described the governor's remarks during a recent media chat as an attempt to revisit past political disagreements rather than address current governance concerns facing the state.
Debate Over Political Loyalty
The governor had reportedly referenced his past political relationship with former Governor Bello, suggesting that his goodwill and support were not reciprocated.
However, individuals familiar with the political history of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State contend that political successes within the party were products of collective efforts rather than individual sponsorship.
According to them, the APC structure that produced successive administrations in the state was built through the contributions of party members, stakeholders, and supporters across various levels.
They argue that political support should not be viewed as a debt to be repaid but as part of the evolving nature of democratic politics.
Questions on Governance Performance
Beyond the political disagreement, Bello's associates have challenged the Bago administration to provide measurable evidence of its achievements.
They maintain that public assessment of any government should be based on tangible outcomes, including infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, education, water supply, and economic growth.
According to the group, citizens are increasingly interested in concrete performance indicators and project outcomes rather than political exchanges between current and former officeholders.
The allies also called for the publication of a comprehensive scorecard detailing projects executed, completed, or improved upon since the current administration assumed office.
Revenue and Public Accountability
The discussion also extended to state finances, with the group citing publicly available revenue figures from federal allocations.
They noted that increasing revenues to states have heightened public expectations regarding service delivery and development outcomes.
According to them, citizens are entitled to ask questions about how public funds are being utilized and the impact such expenditures are having on their daily lives.
The group identified healthcare, road infrastructure, water supply, agriculture, security, and social services as key sectors where residents expect visible improvements.
Concerns Over Democratic Space
Another issue raised by the former governor's supporters relates to the governor's warning against what he described as unfounded allegations.
The group expressed concern that such remarks could be interpreted as discouraging legitimate criticism and public scrutiny.
They argued that democratic governance requires openness to questioning, criticism, and debate, particularly from citizens, journalists, civil society organizations, and political stakeholders.
According to them, accountability is strengthened when governments respond to concerns with transparency and evidence rather than confrontation.
Looking Ahead
The exchanges come amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle and have highlighted differing perspectives within the APC in Niger State.
While the debate has centered on political history and loyalty, observers note that many residents remain primarily concerned with issues affecting their daily lives, including economic conditions, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of any administration will be judged not by political rhetoric but by its ability to deliver measurable improvements in the lives of the people.
