Troops Intercept Truck Carrying Large Consignment of Illicit Drugs in Lagos

Suspect Handed Over to NDLEA for Investigation and Prosecution

Troops of the 65 Battalion of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a truck conveying a large consignment of illicit drugs along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and arrested its driver during an intelligence-led operation.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the operation was carried out on July 9, 2026, following actionable intelligence from a credible source.

The statement said troops successfully intercepted the vehicle and took the driver into custody. Preliminary investigations revealed that the illicit drugs were being transported to the Berger area of Lagos State.

Military authorities disclosed that the suspect was unable to provide satisfactory information regarding the ownership or intended recipient of the consignment.

Following the arrest, the suspect and the recovered drugs were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command, for further investigation and possible prosecution. The handover was conducted by the Commanding Officer of 65 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel S. Adeojo.

Reacting to the development, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Babalola, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism.

He urged personnel to sustain ongoing operations and intensify efforts aimed at disrupting the activities of drug traffickers and other criminal elements within the division's area of responsibility.
