The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed claims linking a viral video from Katsina State to banditry activities, describing the narrative accompanying the footage as false and misleading.
According to the Force, the individuals seen in the video are recognised members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters working in collaboration with security agencies to support ongoing security operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.
The Police explained that the footage captured a routine interaction between a police officer and the security volunteers as they headed to an operational area to assist in efforts aimed at combating crime and enhancing public safety.
The Force stated that allegations suggesting the individuals were armed bandits are unfounded and intended to misinform the public.
The NPF condemned the spread of misinformation capable of creating public anxiety, undermining confidence in security institutions, and disrupting ongoing security operations.
The Force urged members of the public to disregard the claims attached to the video and rely on information issued through official channels and authorised government sources.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Nigeria Police Force said it will continue to work closely with legitimate community-based security groups and other stakeholders in the fight against crime across the country.
