The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed concern over the security situation affecting students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), following a recent protest by students over rising insecurity around the institution.
In a statement issued by the NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babtee Babatunde, the student body disclosed that it held discussions with the Vice-Chancellor of FUT Minna on the growing security challenges confronting students within and around the university community.
According to the statement, NANS emphasized that it is the responsibility of the university management to provide a safe, secure, and conducive environment for learning. The association warned that it could relocate activities of its National Headquarters to the institution if urgent and concrete measures are not taken to address the situation.
Responding to the concerns, the Vice-Chancellor reportedly assured NANS that the university management is intensifying efforts to strengthen security on and around the campus. He also expressed confidence that students would soon witness significant improvements in the security situation.
NANS commended FUT Minna students for conducting a peaceful protest and praised the Joint Campus Council (JCC), Niger State, as well as the NANS North Central Zonal Coordinator for their support and leadership throughout the demonstration.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring developments and engaging with the university management until lasting measures are put in place to safeguard lives and property within and around the institution.
NANS stated that the welfare, safety, and academic success of Nigerian students remain its top priority.
