The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme since its establishment over five decades ago.
The approval was announced following a Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
As part of the reforms, the Federal Government directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to initiate amendments to the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to facilitate the implementation of the new framework.
Under the approved structure, the NYSC will be headed by a civilian in its operational leadership, while the military will continue to provide security support for corps members across the country.
The Federal Government said the reform is aimed at repositioning the scheme as a skills-driven and productivity-focused institution that will contribute more effectively to youth empowerment and national development.
Established in 1973 following the Nigerian Civil War, the NYSC was designed to promote national unity, integration and development through the deployment of young graduates to different parts of the country for national service.
The current Director-General of the scheme is Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu.
Government officials described the reform as a significant step towards modernising the NYSC and aligning its operations with contemporary national development priorities.
