Residents living behind the residence of Alhaji Hassan Madaki and surrounding communities in Lapai have welcomed the commencement of reconstruction and erosion-control works at a site severely affected by gully erosion.
The area had become a source of concern following the gradual collapse of soil and drainage infrastructure, which left nearby residential buildings vulnerable to environmental hazards. Deep gullies and severe land degradation reportedly threatened the foundations of houses, raising fears of possible structural failure during the rainy season.
The intervention is aimed at addressing the ecological challenges that have continued to endanger lives, properties, and public infrastructure within the community.
The affected site was originally developed in 2021 through an Ecological Fund project facilitated by the member representing Agaie-Lapai Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud. However, parts of the infrastructure later failed, leading to the resurgence of erosion and the formation of dangerous gullies in the area.
Residents described the situation as distressing, noting that continuous erosion had brought the advancing gully dangerously close to residential buildings and cut through sections of the surrounding environment.
The ongoing reconstruction comes about four months after the Niger State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Mu'azu Hamidu Jantabo, conducted a supervisory visit to the affected community. During the inspection, the commissioner acknowledged the extent of the damage and the risks posed to homes and other structures by the deteriorating environmental condition.
Community members have commended the government's response, expressing hope that the reconstruction and erosion-control measures will provide a lasting solution to the environmental threat and protect lives and property from further damage.
