Kano State says it will collaborate with the Federal Government and project partners as preparations begin for the ₦1.05 trillion urban rail development.
The Federal Government has deployed a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and Mota-Engil Nigeria to Kano State as part of preparations for the commencement of the Kano Light Rail Project, a proposed urban rail system valued at ₦1.05 trillion.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the delegation, led by Dr. Armstrong Takang, Managing Director of MOFI, and the Chairman of Mota-Engil Nigeria, Mr. Kola Karim, met with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in Abuja to brief him on arrangements completed ahead of the project's groundbreaking ceremony.
The statement said the delegation updated the governor on the level of preparedness for the official launch of the project, which received approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Kano Light Rail Project is expected to improve urban transportation within Kano by reducing traffic congestion, enhancing mobility, and supporting commercial activities across the city.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed the Kano State Government's commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and the project's contractors to ensure the successful implementation of the rail system.
He described the project as a strategic investment that would strengthen Kano's position as a commercial hub in northern Nigeria while providing residents with a modern and efficient public transport network.
The governor also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the project and acknowledged the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, for his reported role in securing legislative support for its implementation.
