The Federal Government has stated that it has no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, saying its priority is to improve power supply, expand access to electricity meters and strengthen service delivery across the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made the clarification while outlining the Federal Government's approach to ongoing reforms in the power sector. He said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on ensuring that electricity consumers pay only for the energy they consume through wider deployment of prepaid meters.
According to the minister, the government is implementing measures aimed at improving electricity generation and distribution while ensuring that consumers receive better services rather than introducing additional tariff increases.
Tegbe said the Federal Government would continue to explore policies that protect low-income and vulnerable Nigerians from undue financial burdens while working towards a financially sustainable electricity sector.
He explained that the ongoing reforms in the power sector are designed to deliver measurable improvements through structured implementation, collaboration and regular assessment of outcomes, rather than being driven by political considerations.
The minister added that the success of the reforms would be measured by the impact they have on the daily lives of Nigerians, particularly through more reliable electricity supply and improved service delivery.
He reaffirmed that the government's long-term objective is to provide stable electricity capable of meeting the needs of households, supporting industrial growth, attracting investment and strengthening economic development across the country.
