Hundreds of residents, civil society organisations, security agencies, youth groups, and government representatives on Thursday participated in an awareness walk against human trafficking in Minna, Niger State, as part of activities marking the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
The sensitisation walk was organised by the Civil Society Network on Migration and Development (CSOnetMADE) in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) under the theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam." The exercise began at the Mobile Roundabout and ended at the Women Multi-Purpose Hall near the Old Secretariat, where participants held a public awareness programme.
Speaking during the event, the Niger State Commander of NAPTIP, Emmanuel, said human trafficking often begins with deceptive promises of employment, education and better living opportunities but frequently results in exploitation. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected trafficking activities to the appropriate authorities.
Also addressing participants, the Founder of Timeless Global Foundation, Mirabel Ojahiri, warned that traffickers often disguise their operations as legitimate opportunities for overseas education and employment. She said many victims eventually become subjected to forced labour, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse.
The Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Abubakar Adamu Kuta, described public awareness as a critical strategy in the fight against human trafficking. He called on journalists, government institutions, traditional and community leaders, and other stakeholders to support NAPTIP's efforts by educating the public on the methods used by traffickers.
Participants marched through parts of Minna carrying placards bearing anti-human trafficking messages while urging parents, guardians and young people to exercise caution when presented with suspicious travel, employment and educational opportunities.
The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining public sensitisation campaigns and strengthening collaboration with relevant stakeholders to prevent human trafficking and protect vulnerable persons across Niger State.
