The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of an unspecified number of Muslim worshippers in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State following Friday prayers in Dekara community.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, shortly after the conclusion of the weekly Juma’at prayers at the Central Mosque in Dekara. According to eyewitness accounts, suspected bandits abducted worshippers from Gidan Zana, Masaka, Sabon Gida and other neighbouring communities.
Among those reportedly taken is the 90-year-old father of the District Head of Dekara, according to local sources.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said no death had been recorded in connection with the attack.
Abiodun said security agencies had been deployed to the affected communities to search for and rescue the abducted persons.
However, he noted that the condition of the roads was hampering the operation, particularly a collapsed bridge linking the affected communities with the local government headquarters, which has slowed the movement of security personnel.
The police have not disclosed the exact number of people abducted, while rescue operations remain ongoing.
