The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday nationwide to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Friday, August 21, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani. The date is also listed as the 2026 Eid-ul-Mawlid public holiday in Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion, urging Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity for reflection on the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
According to the minister, Eid-ul-Mawlid provides an opportunity to draw lessons from the Prophet’s life, particularly values such as compassion, humility, service to others, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He said these values remain important to Nigeria at a time when the country needs greater understanding, tolerance and unity.
The minister also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, national unity and cohesion, while urging citizens to celebrate the religious occasion peacefully and with consideration for one another.
Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.
The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, 2026, will be observed as a work-free public holiday nationwide in commemoration of Eid-ul-Mawlid.
