At least four people were seriously injured following a clash between farmers and herders in Pampo, a village in the Kataeregi District of Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, according to reports published by Premium Times on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The incident reportedly began after cattle entered a soybean farm belonging to one of the injured farmers. Sources said the farmer attempted to drive the cattle away to prevent further damage to his crops, leading to an argument with one of the herders.
According to the sources, the disagreement escalated when the herder allegedly attacked the farmer with a dagger, causing serious injuries.
The attack reportedly attracted the attention of other farmers working nearby, who went to the scene after hearing cries for help. Two of the farmers who attempted to intervene were also allegedly attacked and injured before the assailant fled.
The injured victims were subsequently taken to a hospital for medical treatment. One of them reportedly sustained a deep cut around the ear and neck area and suffered significant blood loss.
The incident adds to a series of reported farmer-herder disputes in parts of Niger State, with several conflicts linked to disagreements over farmland, grazing and alleged crop destruction.
On July 7, 2026, a farmer-herder clash was reported in Beji, Bosso Local Government Area, leaving one person dead and another injured. The dispute was reportedly linked to cattle entering a farmland and damaging crops.
Earlier, violence around Tegina in Rafi Local Government Area reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 48 people in attacks and reprisals involving Fulani herders and members of the Kamuku community. The violence also spread to Kagara, where authorities imposed a curfew following heightened tensions.
Other farmer-herder disputes have previously been reported in communities including Mailema in Wushishi and Kadna in Shiroro Local Government Area.
The recurring incidents have raised concerns over tensions between farming and pastoral communities, particularly during the farming season when competition over farmland, grazing routes and access to agricultural resources can intensify.
Community leaders in Pampo have called for stronger conflict-resolution mechanisms, increased security presence and sustained dialogue between farmers and herders to prevent disagreements from escalating into violence.
They also urged both communities to exercise restraint and use established community and legal channels to resolve disputes.
