Minna Flood: Pantami Sympathises With Victims, Calls for Preventive Measures

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has expressed sympathy to victims of flooding that affected several communities in Minna, Niger State, following hours of heavy rainfall.

In a statement, Pantami said the flood reportedly destroyed properties estimated at more than ₦100 million and displaced several families, while homes, businesses, vehicles, livestock, farmlands and personal belongings were among the reported losses.

He said he was particularly concerned about residents who lost sources of livelihood and were forced to evacuate their homes as a result of the flooding.

Pantami also extended his sympathy to the people and Government of Niger State, describing the reported extent of the material and economic damage as a major concern.

According to him, no deaths or injuries were reportedly recorded in the incident, although the financial and livelihood losses suffered by affected households remain significant.

He commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the state government and other relevant authorities for their response and assessment of affected communities.

Pantami said the incident should prompt authorities to adopt a more comprehensive and preventive approach to flood management.

He called for stronger drainage infrastructure, protection of natural waterways, improved urban planning and development control, as well as measures to prevent the obstruction of natural drainage channels.

The former minister also urged relevant stakeholders to strengthen preparedness and preventive measures to reduce the impact of future flooding on communities.

The flooding comes amid recurring concerns over the vulnerability of parts of Niger State to the effects of heavy rainfall, highlighting the importance of coordinated disaster preparedness, urban planning and flood-risk management.

Pantami concluded by expressing hope for the recovery of affected families and continued efforts to protect communities from the consequences of natural disasters.
