Senator Isah Mokwa Demands Release of Lawal Mu’azu Obah, Questions Arrest in Shiroro

Abubakar Isah (Sen.Isah Mokwa) has called on the Niger State Commissioner of Police to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest and detention of Lawal Mu’azu Obah in Kuta, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

Mokwa made the call in a video statement in which he questioned the circumstances of Obah’s arrest, particularly the reported involvement of police officers at night. He urged the police to disclose the specific allegation or offence for which Obah was arrested.

Mokwa alleged that Obah’s arrest may be connected to his political activities and support for a preferred candidate. He questioned whether promoting a political candidate, expressing political views or sharing political content constituted sufficient grounds for arrest.

Mokwa also referred to a video reportedly shared by Obah containing political messages, arguing that citizens have the right to support candidates of their choice, provided such activities remain within the law.

He compared Obah’s case with an incident involving his own arrest, which he said occurred at his residence at night. Mokwa described his own experience as unlawful and said the matter remains before the court.

Mokwa called on the police to uphold due process when handling politically sensitive matters, arguing that individuals accused of wrongdoing should, where appropriate, be invited to respond to allegations against them.

Mokwa also raised concerns over insecurity in parts of Niger State, particularly Borgu Local Government Area, where he said residents continue to face kidnapping and other security threats.

He urged the police to strengthen intelligence-led operations against criminal elements and focus resources on addressing security challenges rather than becoming involved in political disputes.

Mokwa further called on the Niger State Commissioner of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding Obah’s arrest and provide clarification on the allegations against him.

He demanded Obah’s release if there is no lawful basis for his continued detention and urged the authorities to ensure transparency in the handling of the matter.
