Bago orders investigation, suspends NSCDC officials and declares three-day mourning period
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has suspended the APC campaign flag-off scheduled for Saturday following the reported deaths of more than 30 artisanal miners in detention after a security operation in Minna.
The governor announced the measures while addressing journalists on Thursday, following the incident involving suspected miners and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Governor Bago also constituted a committee of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths and ordered the suspension of the NSCDC state command leadership and other officials, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The state government has further declared a three-day mourning period in response to the incident.
The reported deaths occurred after security personnel arrested suspected artisanal miners during an operation in Minna.
