The Niger State Branch of the Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN) has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the reported deaths of more than 30 artisanal miners allegedly held at a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) detention facility in Minna following a security raid.
The development follows reports that the miners died while in detention after the security operation in Minna, Niger State. However, details surrounding the reported deaths, including the exact number of fatalities, the circumstances of their detention and the immediate cause of death, remain subject to investigation.
In a statement signed by S. M. Imam, Esq., Chairman of MULAN Niger State Branch and Chairman of its Human Rights Committee, the association expressed concern over the incident and called on relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the reported deaths.
MULAN urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive and credible investigation into the conditions at the detention facility, the response of security personnel and any factors that may have contributed to the loss of lives.
The association also called for the protection of the rights and dignity of persons in detention, in accordance with the Constitution, applicable laws and established standards governing the treatment of detainees.
It further urged authorities to make the findings of the investigation public within the limits permitted by law and establish responsibility where wrongdoing or negligence is established.
MULAN also called for an immediate review of the safety, medical and general welfare conditions of persons held at the facility to prevent a recurrence.
The association appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow the appropriate investigative processes to establish the facts.
