Tinubu Calls for Reform of Global Governance, Financial Institutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for urgent reforms to global governance and international financial institutions, saying the existing system must become more representative, equitable and responsive to changing global economic and demographic realities.

Tinubu made the call at the 2026 BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, where his address was delivered on his behalf by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The President said Nigeria supports reforms to the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council, as well as changes to the international financial system to reflect contemporary global realities.
He also urged BRICS countries to move their cooperation from dialogue to practical implementation, with measurable development outcomes.

Tinubu invited investors from BRICS countries and other parts of the world to explore investment opportunities in Nigeria, describing the country as a gateway to Africa’s large and growing market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He said Nigeria was seeking deeper cooperation with BRICS countries in emerging and strategic sectors, including artificial intelligence, digital public services, fintech, telecommunications, cybersecurity, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure and the processing of critical minerals.

According to the President, such partnerships should promote technology transfer, industrial development, job creation and human-capital development rather than remain limited to diplomatic engagements.
Tinubu also highlighted the role of Nigeria’s young population in driving innovation and entrepreneurship, describing young Nigerians as an important national asset.

He cited government initiatives including 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT), Project BRIDGE and national artificial intelligence programmes as efforts aimed at strengthening digital skills and expanding Nigeria’s digital economy.

The President further called for greater African participation in global technological and economic development, saying the continent should seek a more prominent role in shaping innovation and economic growth.

He maintained that stronger partnerships between Nigeria and BRICS countries could contribute to investment, skills development, industrialisation and broader economic opportunities.
