Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, for investments in agriculture and infrastructure, describing the planned ₦1.5 trillion reconstruction and expansion of the Lambata–Bida–Mokwa–Makera–Kontagora federal highway as a major development expected to strengthen the state's economy.
Idris made the remarks on Friday in Abuja while leading members of the Niger State Development Forum (NSDF) on a courtesy visit to the governor.
The minister described Niger State as strategically important to Nigeria's development, citing its agricultural potential and contribution to the country's electricity supply through the Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro hydropower stations.
He praised the Bago administration's focus on mechanised farming, commercial agriculture, agro-processing industries and urban renewal, saying the investments could help transform the state's economy.
Idris also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the federal highway project, with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for October 13, 2026, in Bida, according to the information provided.
He said the road project would improve access to farming communities, connect markets with industrial centres and facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce and other goods.
The minister described the highway as a major transportation corridor for agriculture and commerce in Nigeria, highlighting its potential to improve economic activities along the route.
In his response, Governor Bago expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for supporting Niger State through federal infrastructure projects, development funding and appointments of indigenes to positions in federal institutions.
The governor said the road project would ease the movement of people and goods, strengthen agricultural production and improve commercial activities across the state.
Idris also extended his condolences to the Niger State Government and residents over recent tragedies and security challenges. He acknowledged the efforts of the federal and state governments, alongside security agencies, to protect lives and property.
