The Federal Government has commissioned four electricity substations in Kano State, with a reported additional capacity of 544 megawatts (MW), in a move aimed at improving power supply to industries, businesses and residential areas.
The projects, located in Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi, were implemented through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in collaboration with the Kano State Government.
According to a statement signed by Adeola Labzy, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Media and Communications, the projects are expected to ease pressure on existing substations, expand transmission capacity and improve electricity access in areas where demand has previously exceeded available supply.
At Walalambe, two transformers rated at 40 megavolt-amperes (MVA) each were installed, providing an additional 80 MVA of transformer capacity. The facility also received six outgoing transmission feeders to serve Tokarawa Industrial Estate, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and surrounding communities.
The statement further disclosed that Lee Group, an industrial company, had returned to using public electricity after generating its own power for more than 30 years.
At Kumbotso, the project included transformer installations rated at 300 MVA at the 330-kilovolt (kV) level and 100 MVA. Meanwhile, Dakata and Dan-Agundi each received an additional 100 MVA transformer at the 132kV level.
The improvements are expected to help distribute electricity more effectively, reduce congestion at existing substations and accommodate additional demand from industrial and commercial users.
The Dan-Agundi substation, which was previously damaged by fire, has also reportedly recovered a substantial portion of its capacity, strengthening electricity supply to parts of Kano metropolis, the palace of the Emir of Kano and neighbouring areas.
In the statement, the Ministry of Power described the projects as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that investment in electricity infrastructure could support industrial growth, small businesses, employment generation and improved living standards.
