Sonmaji Muhammad has urged Niger State Governor, Umar Mohammed Bago, to remain receptive to constructive criticism, saying honest feedback is important for improving governance and addressing challenges affecting residents.
Muhammad made the call in a statement shared on social media, where he expressed concern that some individuals who identify as supporters of the governor may sometimes defend government actions without adequately acknowledging issues requiring attention.
According to him, criticism of the government should not automatically be interpreted as opposition to the governor or his administration.
He said some citizens use social media to raise concerns because they may not have direct access to the governor or other government officials to communicate their observations.
Muhammad argued that excessive defence of government policies and actions could prevent the administration from receiving honest assessments of its performance.
“Governor Bago needs people who will tell him the truth, not only people who will praise him,” he said.
He maintained that constructive criticism should be regarded as part of public participation in governance and could help government identify areas requiring correction.
Muhammad also called on stakeholders to acknowledge initiatives that are working while pointing out areas where improvements are needed.
He said the objective should be to contribute to strengthening the system rather than simply condemning the government.
The statement reflects Muhammad’s personal opinion and does not necessarily represent the views of Lapai TV.
