IBBUL Medical Students Make History With 100% Pass in ABU Professional Exams

Forty-one medical students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), have passed their professional medical examinations at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, without a single resit, according to the IBBUL Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman.

Professor Sulaiman disclosed this while receiving the students after their return from ABU Zaria, describing the result as a significant milestone for the university’s College of Health Sciences.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, information received from ABU indicated that the 41 students were the first complete set of students transferred from another university to pass the professional examinations without a resit. He said the outcome represented a 33-year record at the institution.
“This is the first time that a whole set has passed at ABU. You have broken a 33-year record,” Professor Sulaiman said.

The 41 students, who were part of IBBUL’s pioneer MBBS cohort, were transferred to ABU Zaria in 2026 to continue their medical training while IBBUL worked to strengthen its clinical training infrastructure. Reports from the period of their transfer confirm that ABU admitted the students for continuation of their medical education and professional examinations.
Professor Sulaiman attributed the successful transition to the cooperation of ABU, the support of the Niger State Government and the efforts of IBBUL’s management and academic staff.

He particularly acknowledged the financial support provided by the Niger State Government under Governor and Visitor to IBBUL, Umar Mohammed Bago, saying the intervention covered expenses including students’ fees and accommodation.

The Vice-Chancellor also said the state government had approved interventions intended to strengthen IBBUL’s College of Health Sciences and medical training infrastructure. These, he said, included the upgrading of the university guest house and General Hospital, Minna, as well as work toward completing the permanent IBBUL Teaching Hospital project.
The university has previously said that completion of its teaching hospital is intended to enable subsequent medical students undertake their clinical training within IBBUL.

Professor Sulaiman urged the students to remain disciplined, humble and committed to further study. He also encouraged them to consider returning to IBBUL after completing their professional careers to contribute to teaching, research and clinical services.

Earlier, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Aliyu Abubakar, commended the university management and academic staff for providing the foundation that prepared the students for their examinations at ABU Zaria.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Professor Mohammed Aliyu Bello, also cautioned the students against complacency, stressing that passing the examinations was an important milestone but only part of their longer professional journey in medicine.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the pioneer MBBS class president, Comrade Jamilu Mikayilu, expressed appreciation to the university management, lecturers and Niger State Government for the support provided during their transition to ABU Zaria.

He also credited the academic foundation provided by IBBUL lecturers, saying the students’ preparation was recognised during their time at ABU.

Representing the Registrar, Alhaji Idris Saleh Kusherki, the Academic Secretary, Malam Adamu Isah, commended the state government, university management and College of Health Sciences for their support.

He urged the students to sustain their academic performance and uphold the reputation of IBBUL throughout the remainder of their medical training.

The 41 students’ successful completion of the professional examinations comes as IBBUL continues efforts to develop its medical education infrastructure and strengthen its College of Health Sciences. The university’s current programme information lists MBBS among its health sciences programmes, with its accreditation status indicated as awaiting first accreditation.
