A 96-year-old woman, Hajiya Umma Husaini, has died following an alleged attack by her granddaughter in Daura, Katsina State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the family's residence, where the suspect, identified as Aisha Muktar, allegedly attacked the elderly woman with a mortar.
Sources said neighbours and relatives who rushed to the scene found Hajiya Umma unconscious and critically injured. She was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Daura, for urgent medical treatment.
However, despite efforts by medical personnel, she was later confirmed dead.
Speaking on the incident, the deceased's eldest son, Muktar Husaini, expressed shock over the tragedy, describing his mother as a peaceful and respected woman who had no known disputes with anyone.
Family members disclosed that the late Hajiya Umma had lived with diabetes for many years, a condition that led to the amputation of both legs. Despite her health challenges, she remained prayerful, resilient, and devoted to her family.
The incident has sparked grief across the Daura community, with residents and sympathisers trooping to the family's home to offer condolences.
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson, DSP Sadik Aliyu, said the suspect has been taken into custody while investigations continue to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
Community leaders have condemned the killing and called for justice, urging authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation.
