The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The government described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria's democratic history, honouring the sacrifices, courage and resilience of citizens who contributed to the country's democratic journey.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
He also assured Nigerians of the government's continued efforts to strengthen internal security and protect lives and property across the country, noting that a secure environment remains vital for democracy and national development.
The minister urged citizens to use the occasion for reflection on democratic values, national unity and responsible civic engagement.
He called on Nigerians to remain law-abiding and continue supporting institutions that sustain the nation's democracy.
