The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has approved a $150 million facility for the implementation of the Niger State Solar Energy Development Project, a major initiative aimed at expanding clean electricity generation and improving power supply across the state.
The Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Suleiman Umar, described the approval as a strong vote of confidence in Niger State's energy transformation agenda under the administration of Governor Umaru Bago.
According to the Commissioner, the project is expected to enhance power reliability, diversify the state's energy sources, support climate-friendly development, and reduce dependence on the national grid and fuel-powered generators.
He noted that Niger State possesses one of the highest levels of solar irradiation in Nigeria, making it strategically positioned to harness solar energy for economic growth and sustainable development.
Suleiman Umar said the investment would facilitate the development of large-scale solar infrastructure capable of reducing power outages, lowering energy costs, and creating employment opportunities for residents.
He further assured that the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy would collaborate closely with IsDB, technical partners, and local communities to ensure effective implementation of the project and maximize its benefits for Niger State.
