A 35-year-old woman identified as Osasere has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly throwing her five-year-old son into River Ovia in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred in Onwa community after the woman allegedly acted on the advice of a self-acclaimed seer who claimed the child was a "python spirit."
According to reports, fishermen who witnessed the incident immediately intervened, apprehended the suspect and prevented an angry crowd from attacking her. They also joined efforts to search for the child in the river.
As of the time of filing this report, the child had not been found.
In a video circulating online, the suspect reportedly claimed that her son had not started walking since birth and alleged that a spiritual consultation linked the child to a series of miscarriages she had suffered.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, CSP Eno Ikoedem, said both the woman and the seer had been taken into custody.
The police spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing and that further details would be made available as the case progresses.
