Yobe Governor directs payment of CATA, Professorial and Earned Academic Allowance arrears from August 2026
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has approved the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) Agreement, including the payment of arrears for Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for academic staff in the state's tertiary institutions.
The approval follows the submission of a report by a state Fact-Finding Committee established to review the welfare and remuneration of academic staff. The committee's findings were earlier presented to the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje.
According to a statement issued by the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, Governor Buni directed that payment of the approved allowances should commence in August 2026.
The state government said the decision is aimed at promoting staff welfare, encouraging industrial harmony, and strengthening the quality of higher education in Yobe State.
The Fact-Finding Committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, was tasked with assessing remuneration and welfare packages in selected state-owned universities across the country. The committee visited institutions including Bauchi State University, Kaduna State University (KASU), and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State, to compare existing practices.
Presenting the committee's report, Prof. Kawuwa, represented by Prof. Mohammed Musa Lawan, also recommended measures such as increased research grants, annual salary reviews, improved welfare incentives, and sustained funding of tertiary institutions to enhance efficiency and academic performance.
Receiving the report, Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, commended the committee for its work and expressed optimism that the recommendations would contribute to improved relations between the government and university lecturers.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University chapter, Muhammad Adam, welcomed the governor's approval and described it as a positive step toward improving the welfare of academic staff and supporting quality education in the state.
He also urged members of the union to remain committed to their responsibilities through excellence in teaching, research, and service delivery.
