At least 18 people have been confirmed dead following a renewed communal clash between Fulani pastoralists and Kamukawa farming communities in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the fatalities after violence erupted between June 30 and July 1, 2026, in communities across the Katako, Kuwan Kasa and Kagara Gari districts.
The conflict, linked to a land dispute, is a resurgence of an earlier clash between the two communities in May.
While the police confirmed 18 deaths, community sources claimed the death toll could be higher. Authorities said the figures are still being verified.
Several people were also injured, houses were destroyed, and residents fled affected communities.
Security agencies have deployed to the area, while a Peace and Reconciliation Committee has been constituted to restore calm and prevent further violence.
