Nehemiah Danjuma has made history as the first deaf lawyer from Northern Nigeria to be called to the Nigerian Bar, marking a significant milestone for disability inclusion and equal access to the legal profession.
Danjuma, a native of Jaba Local Government Area in Kaduna State, graduated with a Second Class Upper degree in Common Law from the University of Ilorin before completing the Bar Part II programme at the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School.
Announcing the achievement, Danjuma described the moment as a historic breakthrough, writing: “First Deaf Lawyer from Northern Nigeria. Called to the Bar. History made.”
His accomplishment has drawn widespread praise from legal professionals, disability rights advocates, and members of the public, who have commended his resilience and determination in overcoming the challenges associated with hearing impairment.
Beyond his academic success, Danjuma has been an active advocate for persons with disabilities. He previously served as Students’ Union Senator representing students with disabilities at the University of Ilorin and later became a two-term National President of the National Association of Nigerian Deaf Students.
Speaking after his call to the Bar, Danjuma expressed appreciation to organisations and individuals who supported his journey, including the Voice of Disability Initiative and the JASAN Foundation, which awarded him a full tuition scholarship at the Nigerian Law School.
His achievement is being celebrated as a major step forward for inclusion, representation, and equal opportunity in Nigeria’s legal profession, inspiring many young Nigerians living with disabilities to pursue their dreams despite challenges.
