The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged journalists to present a balanced and accurate narrative of Northern Nigeria, stressing that the region should not be defined solely by security challenges.
Speaking at the inaugural Arewa Media Summit in Kano on Monday, Idris said Northern Nigeria is home to entrepreneurs, farmers, innovators, researchers, artists and young people making significant contributions to national development.
He noted that the media plays a vital role in shaping public perception, attracting investment, strengthening democracy and promoting national unity, urging media professionals to uphold ethical, balanced and responsible journalism.
The minister warned against the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation, emphasizing that professional journalism remains critical in ensuring accuracy, fairness and accountability in public discourse.
Idris reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to press freedom and pledged continued support for an environment that enables journalists to carry out their duties professionally.
He also highlighted ongoing federal investments in infrastructure, education, security and economic reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at creating opportunities and driving growth across the country.
The minister called on journalists to tell stories that inspire confidence, promote unity and showcase the achievements and potential of Northern Nigeria alongside its challenges.
The Arewa Media Summit brought together journalists, broadcasters, digital content creators, academics, communication experts and policymakers from across the region.
