:Public accountability organisation, Tracka, has called on relevant health authorities to urgently rehabilitate the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Gabi, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, following a monitoring visit that reportedly uncovered significant infrastructural deficiencies at the facility.
According to Tracka, the visit revealed that sections of the facility's ceiling are leaking, allowing rainwater to enter the building during rainfall. The organisation also reported mold-infested walls, damaged windows and other structural defects, which it said could affect the quality of healthcare services provided to residents.
Tracka further disclosed that a borehole project initiated at the health centre about four years ago has been abandoned. Although the facility is connected to the public water supply network, the organisation noted that the supply is unreliable, leaving the health centre without a dependable source of water for routine operations.
The organisation urged the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and the Niger State Ministry of Primary Healthcare to facilitate the immediate renovation of the facility and ensure the completion of the abandoned borehole project.
Tracka stressed that functional primary healthcare facilities are essential to improving access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural communities, and called for the effective utilisation of public funds to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
As of the time of filing this report, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and the Niger State Ministry of Primary Healthcare had not publicly responded to Tracka's observations and appeal for intervention.
